Transferring into the College of General Studies

The College of General Studies offers courses primarily in the evening on a full- or part-time basis.

The College of General Studies (CGS) is the division of the School of Arts and Sciences that has specific responsibility for continuing education. The College of General Studies provides the returning student additional counseling and support services and allows its students to enroll in both CGS and College of Arts and Sciences courses. It has been our experience that CGS offers returning students a more flexible learning environment and thus a more successful entry into Penn's academic community.

The number and variety of courses offered by CGS enables a student to receive an Associate or Bachelor of Arts degree. Students who have been absent from formal study for a time and are interested in part-time or full-time liberal arts study in the evening should generally apply directly to the College of General Studies. In some cases, it may be preferable to apply to CGS through the transfer admissions office. A CGS counselor will be glad to assist in determining the appropriate plan.

Guest Students: The College of General Studies enrolls students in its Guest Student Program for one or two semesters. Students in this program may take full-time courses in the College of Arts and Sciences on a space available basis. No financial aid from the University of Pennsylvania is available for guest students.

Students who have been denied admission as transfer students must wait one year until they are eligible to apply to any of the programs in the College of General Studies.
